VUCA Explained

The common usage of the term VUCA began in the 1990s and derives from military vocabulary, where it refers to the experience of officers in operations. It tries to capture the uncertain and dynamically changing situation of a military engagement where there is a lack of information. Events often just happen in a chaotic and unpredictable fashion in what is also called the "fog of war". Military commanders sometimes describe this as being in a world of unknown unknowns – this is the extreme version of a VUCA world. In this section, we will talk about how to develop strategies for operating within this VUCA environment. So let’s start by talking a bit about strategy and our traditional approach to it in a nonVUCA world.

Complex Project Management

A project is a temporary endeavor composed of a set of tasks that are coordinated into achieving a particular result. It is designed to execute on the organization’s strategy

Wicked Problems Explained

The concept of a wicked problem first derives from social planning and political science. Horst Rittel and Melvin Webber formally described the concept of wicked problems back in the 1970s, contrasting it with relatively "tame,” solvable problems.

Networked Organizations

In this video, we talk about the rise of the networked economy within post-industrial societies, how it is enabling whole new forms of networked organizations and the access economy.

Self-Organization

Self-organization is one of the major themes within complex systems and a pervasive phenomenon in our world, complex organizations like schools of fish, ant colonies, and car traffic manage to organize themselves into emergent patterns without any form of global coordination. In this video, we will look at how self-organization applies to organization design and business management.

Collaborative Organizations

In this video, we look at how creating collaborative organizations requires connecting people and aligning their incentives and interests with the whole organization. We talk about how through systems thinking we can try to identify integrative solutions that turn zero-sum either-or dynamics into positive-sum situations.

Platform Organizations

Here we look at open platform organizations, where a platform organization is an organization that supports the interaction or exchange between two or more other parties.

Systems Dynamics

System dynamics is one modeling language from systems theory that is used in the management of large complex systems in order to try and capture these local causal links and how their interactions over time give rise to longterm patterns of behavior.

Complexity Management – Emergence

In this video we talk about systems thinking and the two basic approaches to management, that of reductionism and emergence. We look a the idea of obliquity and give various example of the systems thinking approach to management.

Systems Thinking Management

In this video we look at systems thinking as applied to management. Systems thinking is a paradigm, a paradigm is the fundamental conceptual framework or model we use for interpreting events
